Raise Your Hands!



OK, raise your hands if you are currently numbed to the following terms: sustainability,  local produce,  greenhouse gas.  How about: carbon footprint,  wind farms,  peak oil?  Try these: Kyoto Protocol,  clean coal,  climate change.  Yeah, me, too.               
Seriously. I hear these and others through media and learned friends. The terms are casually thrown around so much that their significance seems gutted or condensed. (...polar bear...) They get swept under the rug. (...rain barrel...)  Why is that?  
We, as teachers, do need to be very alert to the whole global health thing.  As I dig into the issues at hand for the near future I find the whole concept intimidating and overwhelming. I do keep up on current events.  Educators do that. But current events that affect the future...well...that’s sometimes a different story. Many issues require a deep breath and some fortitude to read and digest.

Yet we are the facilitators for the school kids who will be front and center in twenty years, as mega-world decisions have to be made. What are our obligations in this department?  
I believe it's clear teachers ought to be involved, and now. What we internalize ourselves and how we pass it along to kids is up for discussion. Lot’s of it.  I’m sure topics like ethics and politics and geography and wealth will come up. Light themes, heavier themes, themes from daily living. Lot's of stuff for reflection.

Roles in Preparing Children for a Resilient Future

We refer to kids of all ages as our future citizens.  Their education as child citizens is structured toward that goal;  curricula is established to promote the continuation and improvement of our society.  We expect this structure to create thoughtful, informed and responsible adult citizens.  We assume, often passively, the continuation of our society through our progeny. 

There is a certain perceived status quo into which children get launched as adults.  This would be the American status quo of potential opportunity, generally abundant food and shelter, education, and convenience provided by the power of cheap electricity and oil. 


Our technologies provide for us at work, in communication and for ease of life. We expect our well-rounded kids to be equipped to handle themselves as mature and responsible adults in this setting.   Significantly, though, Citizen in the Future has a much heavier connotation now than during past generations.

Spaceship Earth is being squeezed to its diminished self by over populated societies that continue to overuse finite resources.  Benign negligence to this reality is swiftly catching societies, including ours, off guard. The era of industrialization and human dominance over the natural world has produced a strong immunity for accurate and reasonable foresight. 
The coming half century will bring a reckoning and wake-up call for all of us, especially in developed societies. The concept of finiteness will hit us like an incredulous slap to the forehead. The doubting and disbelieving, the unwitting ignorance and inconvenient truth of it all will still be dragging us kicking and screaming into mid century.  
Decision makers and problem solvers two decades hence must have a pocketful of insights. They must be steeped in issues of endangered and invasive species, life cycles, the preservation of ecological webs, natural resource finiteness, and lifestyle habits of sustainability and resiliency.  
Our citizens in the future will need to be open to new paradigms. These lifestyle paradigms will include less convenience. They include less than customary comforts, less to waste and fewer possessions. 


Earth Education for citizens of the future will provide the means to understanding and problem-solving these ever more complicated issues.  It will be imperative they have a true sense of World Citizen.  
Earth awareness must be based in experience. It must be real. It can be made real in the traditional classroom. It must, however, include the natural classroom, where organisms and weather and human impact interact with one another. Today’s ten-year-olds must touch Earth. They must have first hand experiential contact with nature.  
Children need to be alert and observant; senses in high gear. They need to pay attention. There is currently too much passive awareness among their parents and teachers, especially with issues of global health. Child citizens need to boost active awareness skills and acquire ownership of issues in the form of global stewardship.   
Experience need not be exotic. It is allowing kids to get dirty, get wet, get bruised, get scared and get the connections of field or woods or city park.  It is encouraging them to run and chase along paths; to hide or spy on each other; to climb and spring trees and to scale sandstone outcroppings; to fall in a pond and to make forts so cozy they forget to go home for dinner.  
These are the children who become comfortable and intimate with the natural world.  Constructive or free play will help mold their ownership of the state of the environment.
Of course, the overall object is not to overwhelm students by grinding away on Climate Change, Peak Oil Production, Fresh Water Depletion and Population Overshoot. The object is to construct and provide experience in the natural world’s ecology. Kids must feel they have joined the ecology web themselves. They need to feel like lifetime members in an ecological niche.  
These nature-web children will be Earth's interpreters, advocates, defenders, problem solvers and saviors. In the years leading to 2030 and beyond, they will get it. They will be prepared to initiate and implement the tough decisions and sacrifices that we will all experience in the coming Transition. They will get it
The upshot?   
Children need to understand, on the tactile level, the pulse of the natural world. They need to understand, on a scientific level, the interrelationships and balances Earth requires. They need to understand, on a philosophical level, the concept of Spaceship Earth and moral commitments to it. The citizen of 2030 needs to walk this path in 2014. 
Societies in the developed world regularly turn away from their obligations of uncomfortable global issues. It is too easy to continue the gifted ways of life that natural resources have given us. It is time, now, to own up to the fact that the growing lack of these resources and some destructive by-products will require societal change.  
James Kunstler refers to the not-to-distant future as the Long EmergencyThere will certainly be a Transition. Our culture will require quite a power-down in energy usage and a substantial change in lifestyles. We all need to be conscious of our future. Especially educators. 
The role of teachers in this mix is integralCurrent 4th graders will need to be cultural leaders in 2030. Teachers must be contemporary guides.  They are in the driver’s seat that steers future savviness. They must know how to steer.


But why would teachers be any more willing than others to delve into all this? We won’t. It’s daunting material. There are hundreds of other dynamics going on in the classroom. The cry is always, “Not something more...!”  Yet, unfortunately...
Finally, though serious in scope, our global future needs to be addressed with hope and optimism. Serious, yes. Uncomfortable, yes. Doomsday, no. 
Teachers will need to first approach the issue as a stimulation of foresight; as an initiation of the discussion; as an opportunity to acquire resources.  How teachers create lesson plans is not directly pertinent at this point.  How teachers inform themselves of our future, is. 


Youth Are Getting It !

Google “climate change youth” and be gratified by the number of entries referencing high schoolers and young adults who are dealing with and charging into climate issues.

Millenials? Yup. Current middle schoolers? Absolutely. Indeed, youth action groups are increasing; often leaving parents and grandparents far behind in foresights and civic responsibility to climate change issues.

Here’s a representation of three prominent youth organizations:


Alliance for Climate Education  (ACE) 



Founded in 2008 in California, the Alliance for Climate Education has challenged youth to understand and pass the message about climate change.

The mission:
Our goal by 2020 is to educate, inspire and activate 12 million teens and young adults as part of a multigenerational force for carbon reduction and healthy communities.” 
“We value the right of young people today to know about climate change; the science, its causes and the radically different futures that will result from the action, or inaction, we take today. 
“We believe that teens and young adults can handle the truth and we have a moral imperative to share the science, communicate the consequences and spark the solutions with them.”
These are strong and necessary commitments. 

The primary mode for spreading the word of ACE is through assembly programs at middle and high schools. These form the kick-offs for youth to take on personal life style changes (look up DOT) and begin their climate change mitigation actions. Presentations incorporate the latest national Next Generation Science Standards for public schools. Programs have been given in most areas of the United States (including Wisconsin) and have anchored into a dozen specified regions.  National recognition is growing, as this NPR clip explains.  

iMatter Youth: Kids vs Global Warming


Kids vs Global Warming was started with passionate, grassroot actions and education by an incredible teenager, Alec Loorz. I began following Alec at age 13, who, with his mom, organized a youth movement.  Alec had a vision of moral responsibility to climate change issues and excelled in animated graphics and the spoken wordNow, at 18, he is leading iMatter Youth in multiple directions, including the lobbying of the US Congress.

”We know that our futures are at stake.  And the solutions are going to take a whole lot more than riding our bikes and changing lightbulbs.  We need to look at the core of the problem.  We need a revolutionary mindset shift.  And we, the generation with the most at risk, are making that happen.  We are the solution. We are the Youth vs Global Warming. And we matter.” 

Take time to listen to the “Voices” of youth who have taken the gut initiative to act in each of their lives, such as Jaime of Arizona. 


Global Power Shift

350.org is the foremost international grassroots organization for climate change action.  Founder Bill McKibben began the movement along with college students at Vermont’s Middlebury College, and young adults have been a huge part of the energy ever since.  Youth of all ages are encouraged to get to work through 350Youth.   

Global Power Shift was formed to gather and coordinate young climate leaders from around the world.  Once trained and inspired, these leaders return to their own countries to head up regional actions and education. 

“Global Power Shift is a catalyst for bolder, broader, deeper action and organising in our movements to confront those causing the climate crisis and for social justice.” 

The most recent international gathering was in Istanbul, Turkey in June of 2013. Young participants from 134 countries shared cultural backgrounds and worked on strategies for climate action.  From Istanbul, the Phase 2 operations began back in home countries in October. In the USA, Power Shift Pittsburgh drew thousands of young adults, including four UW Madison students sponsored by 350Madison.

It is fairly certain that adult greed and lack of compromise world-wide will stall actions necessary for a livable planet.  The common concerns from our younger generations seems to reinforce the proverbial Native American sentiment:

"The world was not given to you by your parents; 
it was loaned to you by your children."

As far as I know, Bill McKibben is not known for facetious opinion. I've followed him as he has become the leading world advocate of citizen action on climate change issues. He is easy going and tireless. 


The following piece, however, needed to be written to provide another in a series of wake-up calls for us all: To allow ourselves to begin connecting the dots.

A Link Between Climate Change and Joplin Tornadoes? Never!

Caution: It is vitally important not to make connections. When you see pictures of rubble like this week’s shots from Joplin, Mo., you should not wonder: Is this somehow related to the tornado outbreak three weeks ago in Tuscaloosa, Ala., or the enormous outbreak a couple of weeks before that (which, together, comprised the most active April for tornadoes in U.S. history). No, that doesn’t mean a thing.

It is far better to think of these as isolated, unpredictable, discrete events. It is not advisable to try to connect them in your mind with, say, the fires burning across Texas — fires that have burned more of America at this point this year than any wildfires have in previous years. Texas, and adjoining parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico, are drier than they’ve ever been — the drought is worse than that of the Dust Bowl. But do not wonder if they’re somehow connected.

If you did wonder, you see, you would also have to wonder about whether this year’s record snowfalls and rainfalls across the Midwest — resulting in record flooding along the Mississippi — could somehow be related. And then you might find your thoughts wandering to, oh, global warming, and to the fact that climatologists have been predicting for years that as we flood the atmosphere with carbon we will also start both drying and flooding the planet, since warm air holds more water vapor than cold air.

It’s far smarter to repeat to yourself the comforting mantra that no single weather event can ever be directly tied to climate change. There have been tornadoes before, and floods — that’s the important thing. Just be careful to make sure you don’t let yourself wonder why all these record-breaking events are happening in such proximity — that is, why there have been unprecedented megafloods in Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan in the past year. Why it’s just now that the Arctic has melted for the first time in thousands of years. No, better to focus on the immediate casualties; watch the videotape from the store cameras as the shelves are blown over. Look at the news anchorman standing in his waders in the rising river as the water approaches his chest.

Because if you asked yourself what it meant that the Amazon has just come through its second hundred-year drought in the past five years, or that the pine forests across the western part of this continent have been obliterated by a beetle in the past decade — well, you might have to ask other questions. Such as: Should President Obama really just have opened a huge swath of Wyoming to new coal mining? Should Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sign a permit this summer allowing a huge new pipeline to carry oil from the tar sands of Alberta? You might also have to ask yourself: Do we have a bigger problem than $4-a-gallon gasoline?

Better to join with the U.S. House of Representatives, which voted 240 to 184 this spring to defeat a resolution saying simply that “climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for public health and welfare.” 

Propose your own physics; ignore physics altogether. Just don’t start asking yourself whether there might be some relation among last year’s failed grain harvest from the Russian heat wave, and Queensland’s failed grain harvest from its record flood, and France’s and Germany’s current drought-related crop failures, and the death of the winter wheat crop in Texas, and the inability of Midwestern farmers to get corn planted in their sodden fields. Surely the record food prices are just freak outliers, not signs of anything systemic.

It’s very important to stay calm. If you got upset about any of this, you might forget how important it is not to disrupt the record profits of our fossil fuel companies. If worst ever did come to worst, it’s reassuring to remember what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told the Environmental Protection Agency in a recent filing: that there’s no need to worry because “populations can acclimatize to warmer climates via a range of behavioral, physiological, and technological adaptations.” I’m pretty sure that’s what residents are telling themselves in Joplin today.

Pale Blue Dot and Carl Sagan

I remember seeing Carl Sagan often, it seems, on the Johnny Carson Show back in the seventies and eighties. He had an announcer's voice and a huge smile. Sagan's popular draw, however, was as a highly respected scientist who could interpret the vast complexities of the universe in amazingly simple terms. He wrote extensively and produced a TV show.


As the artist of this video clip states, Sagan's words are succinct and potent.  Adam Winnik explains his inspiration:
"I've been enrolled in illustration at Sheridan College for the the last 4 years and this is my final thesis project. I have always thought of Carl Sagan's writings as "scientific poetry" since they lack the cold touch that science is often cursed for having. Past Lesson Plan: Consumer Imports Make Their Stand

I wasn't going to include lesson plans on this blog, but one comes to mind that gave me an "ah-hah!" moment a couple of years ago: Shrinking geography and growing energy usage.


As a part of getting the feel for continents and an exposure to their countries I have had kids check their own homes for tags and markings that show a manufacturing country of origin. Clothing, toys, kitchen items, etc. We usually assembled quite a list. But this particular time we polled 55 countries! This from a 4th grade class of 21, in the midwest.

Colombia,  Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina
Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia

Turkey, Israel, Kuwait, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei, Maylasia, Indonesia, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Marianna Islands, Philippines, 
 Australia
I certainly don't require 4th graders to memorize world countries - seven  continents is enough... But I think an exposure to the political units on these continents is important. Kids will have heard place names like "Thailand" and "Nigeria" and "Bolivia" and associate them with homes beyond our own. Other homes; other cultures. 


As we wrote our country names onto stickies and put them on the world map up front, I began to sense a geography surge. The products in these fourth grade homes all came marching from foreign ports, across and above the four major oceans. Thousands and thousands and thousands of miles on the water and in the air.

World Shipping Lanes


Imports. Energy intensive imports. Right there on our wall map: Products that were somehow outsourced for cheap and/or unjust labor or inexpensive materials. It's been going on for years, of course. But the amount of finite fuel used and emissions spewed simply to carry products from one part of the world to another is grotesque.  


Currently, I cannot go through a store without checking the origin of products. I am cursed and obsessed. Especially in big box stores. It used to be just an exercise in geographic distribution, but now I visualize miles and fuel. Not that I necessarily need all these products - there are hundreds of frivolous objects that don't contribute to my quality of life. But, someday in the relatively near future, these will start to disappear from our shelves.


Do we wean away from them voluntarily now, or wait for them to be yanked because fuel for such non-essentials is unavailable?


What will the shipping lane map look like in twenty years?


What will the clothing tags of 4th graders look like twenty years from now?








Jon Stewart Takes Down Oil Proclamations

This week Richard Heinberg, author and fellow at the Post Carbon Institute, wrote of scenarios related to the Deepwater spill in the Gulf. He included the Daily Show clip from last week in which Jon Stewart hammers home the intent of our presidents of the past, per their proclamations about United States energy independence. Alas, Barack continued the "plea" last week.  


Fortunately, nothing escapes Jon Stewart. Thankfully, humor gives us breathing space. Enjoy, but mind the savvy message. 


Oh, and BTW, to be fair, it isn't only the president of a nation that influences carbon agenda. Hmmm, who else could be carbon-dependent?



Teaching 2020 Foresight

There are so many ways to respond to the Deepwater Gulf spill debacle and we still get clogged up with blame #1, #2, and #3.  We (comfortable Americans) still look for linear solutions instead of the bigger picture.  The problem in the Gulf is not that there was drilling at 5,000 ft.  The problem is the complicated and addictive need for oil in our society.  

Zenobia Barlow and the Center for Ecoliteracy are right on target with what I believe to be a decisive pathway through this murky time.  Teachers; education training programs; enlightened children.  


Do we have 20/20 hindsight; or 2020 foresight?



Education System Will Benefit from Nature’s Course

“Aboard a boat in the Gulf of Mexico this week, Vernon Asper, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi, told NPR: ‘The very best thing probably is to let nature take its course.’


“He was not, of course, alone in his response (in this case, referring to the deep-water microbes that decompose oil.) In the face of the daunting Gulf of Mexico oil spill—still spilling, one month after the explosion—it is tempting to resort, on rational or spiritual grounds, to thoughts about the healing powers of nature. We poor humans, after all, don’t yet even know how much oil has spilled, or how to stop it.


“But how might things have turned out differently if more of us had understood the course of nature—and acted on that understanding—before this crisis hit? Would we have better estimated nature’s capacity to compensate for human mistakes and limited ourselves to actions and technologies whose consequences we could manage? Would we have learned to calculate and live within an energy budget that doesn’t require dangerous extraction practices?


“If there is any good at all to come of the latest Gulf disaster, it is that more people might recognize the very real need for schools to accept responsibility for nurturing a new kind of understanding and caring, which has been variously called ecoliteracy, ecological intelligence, and education for sustainable living.


“We urgently need schools to prepare young people for a world marked by climate change, water shortages, and significant threats to food security—and then share the teaching and learning experiences that inspire them to develop more creative, sustainable ways of living.


“Education for sustainable living recognizes that the skills and wisdom that were once sufficient for our survival as a species are no longer adequate for modern life. It reveals the hidden web of connections between human activities and nature’s systems and our impact on the planet, health, and social systems. And it points young people in the direction of better, more sustainable ways of living.


“Surely, it’s a better than hoping that nature will bail us out of our messes.”
