Roles in Preparing Children for a Resilient Future

We refer to kids of all ages as our future citizens.  Their education as child citizens is structured toward that goal;  curricula is established to promote the continuation and improvement of our society.  We expect this structure to create thoughtful, informed and responsible adult citizens.  We assume, often passively, the continuation of our society through our progeny. 

There is a certain perceived status quo into which children get launched as adults.  This would be the American status quo of potential opportunity, generally abundant food and shelter, education, and convenience provided by the power of cheap electricity and oil. 


Our technologies provide for us at work, in communication and for ease of life. We expect our well-rounded kids to be equipped to handle themselves as mature and responsible adults in this setting.   Significantly, though, Citizen in the Future has a much heavier connotation now than during past generations.

Spaceship Earth is being squeezed to its diminished self by over populated societies that continue to overuse finite resources.  Benign negligence to this reality is swiftly catching societies, including ours, off guard. The era of industrialization and human dominance over the natural world has produced a strong immunity for accurate and reasonable foresight. 
The coming half century will bring a reckoning and wake-up call for all of us, especially in developed societies. The concept of finiteness will hit us like an incredulous slap to the forehead. The doubting and disbelieving, the unwitting ignorance and inconvenient truth of it all will still be dragging us kicking and screaming into mid century.  
Decision makers and problem solvers two decades hence must have a pocketful of insights. They must be steeped in issues of endangered and invasive species, life cycles, the preservation of ecological webs, natural resource finiteness, and lifestyle habits of sustainability and resiliency.  
Our citizens in the future will need to be open to new paradigms. These lifestyle paradigms will include less convenience. They include less than customary comforts, less to waste and fewer possessions. 


Earth Education for citizens of the future will provide the means to understanding and problem-solving these ever more complicated issues.  It will be imperative they have a true sense of World Citizen.  
Earth awareness must be based in experience. It must be real. It can be made real in the traditional classroom. It must, however, include the natural classroom, where organisms and weather and human impact interact with one another. Today’s ten-year-olds must touch Earth. They must have first hand experiential contact with nature.  
Children need to be alert and observant; senses in high gear. They need to pay attention. There is currently too much passive awareness among their parents and teachers, especially with issues of global health. Child citizens need to boost active awareness skills and acquire ownership of issues in the form of global stewardship.   
Experience need not be exotic. It is allowing kids to get dirty, get wet, get bruised, get scared and get the connections of field or woods or city park.  It is encouraging them to run and chase along paths; to hide or spy on each other; to climb and spring trees and to scale sandstone outcroppings; to fall in a pond and to make forts so cozy they forget to go home for dinner.  
These are the children who become comfortable and intimate with the natural world.  Constructive or free play will help mold their ownership of the state of the environment.
Of course, the overall object is not to overwhelm students by grinding away on Climate Change, Peak Oil Production, Fresh Water Depletion and Population Overshoot. The object is to construct and provide experience in the natural world’s ecology. Kids must feel they have joined the ecology web themselves. They need to feel like lifetime members in an ecological niche.  
These nature-web children will be Earth's interpreters, advocates, defenders, problem solvers and saviors. In the years leading to 2030 and beyond, they will get it. They will be prepared to initiate and implement the tough decisions and sacrifices that we will all experience in the coming Transition. They will get it
The upshot?   
Children need to understand, on the tactile level, the pulse of the natural world. They need to understand, on a scientific level, the interrelationships and balances Earth requires. They need to understand, on a philosophical level, the concept of Spaceship Earth and moral commitments to it. The citizen of 2030 needs to walk this path in 2014. 
Societies in the developed world regularly turn away from their obligations of uncomfortable global issues. It is too easy to continue the gifted ways of life that natural resources have given us. It is time, now, to own up to the fact that the growing lack of these resources and some destructive by-products will require societal change.  
James Kunstler refers to the not-to-distant future as the Long EmergencyThere will certainly be a Transition. Our culture will require quite a power-down in energy usage and a substantial change in lifestyles. We all need to be conscious of our future. Especially educators. 
The role of teachers in this mix is integralCurrent 4th graders will need to be cultural leaders in 2030. Teachers must be contemporary guides.  They are in the driver’s seat that steers future savviness. They must know how to steer.


But why would teachers be any more willing than others to delve into all this? We won’t. It’s daunting material. There are hundreds of other dynamics going on in the classroom. The cry is always, “Not something more...!”  Yet, unfortunately...
Finally, though serious in scope, our global future needs to be addressed with hope and optimism. Serious, yes. Uncomfortable, yes. Doomsday, no. 
Teachers will need to first approach the issue as a stimulation of foresight; as an initiation of the discussion; as an opportunity to acquire resources.  How teachers create lesson plans is not directly pertinent at this point.  How teachers inform themselves of our future, is. 


Pale Blue Dot and Carl Sagan

I remember seeing Carl Sagan often, it seems, on the Johnny Carson Show back in the seventies and eighties. He had an announcer's voice and a huge smile. Sagan's popular draw, however, was as a highly respected scientist who could interpret the vast complexities of the universe in amazingly simple terms. He wrote extensively and produced a TV show.


As the artist of this video clip states, Sagan's words are succinct and potent.  Adam Winnik explains his inspiration:

What Exactly Is Seven Billion?

This is the year of the additional landmark digit for world population. I added a population number on the sidebar to remind me of this coming billion, only twelve years past the last one. And while the number of people on Earth isn't necessarily a daily footprint thought for us, its significance is what drives all resources available for life.


The rate of growth has, indeed, slowed somewhat in past decades. But the immense numbers are unevenly distributed geographically and in terms of wealth and resource use. This further stresses the sheer number of individuals to be supported by Mother Earth. (see other thoughts in blog)


National Geographic will be helping everyone understand the magnitude of this challenge. Their new quick-clip video is sobering and feels somewhat sensationalistic. But it's necessary. (Yes, it could be construed to be an advertisement for their mag, but I place them higher than that on the credibility ladder.) 


Planet Population: A Check-In Six Months Later

Exactly six months ago today I mentioned that the global population was well on its way to a 2011 total of seven billion. Current numbers are always registering on the Population Institute counter, which reflects net population.

The dynamic digits, at this moment, stand at six billion, eight hundred twenty-nine million, seven hundred twenty-nine thousand, four hundred forty-six.  


In 4th grade expanded notation, that's:

6,000,000,000 + 800,000,000 + 20,000,000 + 9,000,000
 + 700,000 + 20,000 + 9,000 + 400 + 40 + 6

So, our six month global population increase is 30,823,331.

Now, here comes the obligatory comparison. How much is thirty million individuals in terms of another political entity on Earth? Well, it's Uganda. Uganda is currently ranked as the 39th most populous nation. That's also close to 38th ranked Afghanistan. 

Of course population increase scatters itself globally and so, in a sense, it's silly to compare the number to one geographic unit. But even to allow for a global sprinkling of 30.8 million additional souls since January 26th...it's a critical consideration.

Thinking Back to the 1999 Head Count

Think back to what you were doing in the fall of 1999 (besides getting ready for the millenium disaster...). At that time, Earth hit the 6,000,000,000 mark: Net population. The zeros of this number were scribbled out on thousands of chalkboards that day.  


We are headed for the finish line of an additional billion people in 2011; a mere 12 years to add a billion. The PopClock I just checked is running at 2+ more souls per second. Approximate total population through today:


6,798,906,115


Unless you are into demography, there is no reason to keep tabs on this number on a regular basis. The continual increase, though, is something to keep in the back of the mind, along with "finiteness."


Finite Oil: Fossil Fuel Reality

An astronaut once said that the view of Earth from space made Earth seem so precious and, yet, at the same time so insignificant.  At both ends of this paradox is finiteness.  Right there is the whole unit.  Right there is the boundary between planet and space.  Earth and infinity.  “Finity” vs. infinity, as it were.

Non-renewable resources, especially oil and coal, are quickly re-enforcing  this notion of what you see is what you get.  Maybe more quickly than most of us know.  Climate Change, even on a slow day, gets more attention than other pieces of the healthy Earth puzzle. This ailing patient has, I’m afraid, more than one malady to overcome.  

Picture yourself holding up a globe at the front of the classroom, patting it affectionately, and saying to the class, 


“Everything we have is right here. Everything we need is right here.”  

But do we really fathom the implications of these comments? 

You set down the blue and green globe and pick up a clear plastic globe with a hole in the top.  Into this hole you pour sloshing greasy liquid from a one liter measuring container.  Exactly one liter.  

“Pretend this is all of the oil within Earth as of 200 years ago...every single bit of oil that is in cracks and pools under the land and oceans, or seeped deeply into rock.”

Now, turn the plastic globe and empty out enough to fill the measuring container back up to the one-half liter mark.
“In the past couple hundred years, people on Earth have used oil for all sorts of things, like plastic and gasoline and fuel to heat houses.  Guess how much people have used?  Yup.  One-half.  We have used up one half of all the oil we know to exist on Earth.”
The concept is Peak Oil. Since extraction of oil began (history of oil production: here and here) for its myriad purposes, more has been produced each year than the year before. Globally, always more than the year before. Peak Oil is the term for the point in time where more oil cannot be extracted in a certain year(s) than the year before. The extraction rate has peaked. Of course because oil is unevenly distributed within the Earth, this varies from nation to nation. (The US peaked in 1970.) But, globally, it means that only one-half the original resource remains under ground. 

We still retain this one-half. But the first half was “easy” and “cheap” oil. Drill and flow. Of the balance, the expenses will rise until it is uneconomical to extract. It will take more energy to extract a barrel than that barrel is worth. Much of the second half of oil will remain untapped for this reason.

It is now estimated by many that the Earth reached peak oil in our current decade, specifically within the last couple of years.  Other estimates give us another decade, and so on.  Regardless of the exact year, Peak Oil is upon us.  M.King Hubbert, a geophysicist, calculated in the 1950‘s the peak year of United States' oil with his bell curve.  He was very close in his prediction.  Oil peak charts now refer to him as one of the first to outline upcoming oil data.

Our difficulty arises, of course, when consumption outpaces a declining availability of oil.  When will oil become too expensive for common use?  The Earth’s population is seven billion. Will conservation offset population growth?  Will technology intercede to offset lack of oil? Will there be government restrictions on oil and natural gas usage?  Will the United States take a lead in dealing with oil reduction?  Will "developed" countries find themselves in need of cultural behavior changes?  Will there be another misguided cry of, "What's our oil doing under your sands?"

  • 1 oil barrel = 42 gallons  
  • World oil extraction ~ 85.47 million barrels/day
  • World oil consumption ~ 85.53 million barrels/day
  • United States extraction ~4.95 million barrels/day
  • United State importations ~9.78 million barrels/day
  • US gasoline use only ~ 8.9 million barrels/day


“A Crude Awakening” is a compelling and sometimes entertaining documentary on 20th century usage of oil.  It would be worth everyone’s time to set aside an hour to watch this 2006 film.
